Forte da Ínsua, classified as a national monument, is located on the islet of Ínsua, in the parish of Moledo and Cristelo in Caminha.

The ensemble, which includes a military structure and a small monastery of Marian inspiration belonging to the regular observance of S. Francisco, originated from a small hermitage built in 1398, having been successively remodeled and reformed in later centuries to improve the efficiency of the fortress according to the defense needs of the Minho border. The fort has an irregular star-shaped plan, with five bastions and ravelin, integrating the convent, which was expanded in 1676.

The intervention corresponds to a requalification, under the REVIVE program. The proposal seeks an integration with the surroundings and simultaneously the preservation of the existing heritage value, offering the region a tourist accommodation with historical and architectural value.

It is intended to implement a hotel establishment that has a diversified program of activities with the following valences: accommodation space consisting of rooms and various common social spaces and support services, a restaurant service to serve guests, a cultural space that contemplates the historical heritage of the building and a program with a recreational aspect, namely leisure, well-being and health in the form of an indoor and outdoor swimming pool and its support services in the form of a bar and spa. The intervention also intends to restore the volumetry of the building set, and in constructive terms, it is not intended to make significant changes to the existing building.

Forte da Ínsua will be a refuge, a space dedicated to self-esteem and balance, combined with a Spa and Sports program of nature and adventure. An attempt was made to preserve the rigorous image of the pre-existence, thus highlighting the new intervention. The predominant material – ceramic – reinforces the idea of ​​something that lasts over time. Its resistance and delicacy allude us to the identity that is intended for this space.
